What’s the Point of Blogging?
Everybody and their mama has a blog these days.
The internet is saturated with blogs of various types, about a myriad of things.
Someone asked me recently, “Why do you have a blog? What’s the point of it?”
My easy answer is that it’s an online journal. For some, blogging is a business. For others, it’s both.
I decided to create a short list of the reasons why I continue to blog (after five years of doing it).
1) It’s an easy way to see how much I’ve grown. Many things have happened since I started blogging! I’ve started and finished graduate school, my husband lost his job, we had a baby, we’ve taken trips, left a church, seen some friendships change, made some new ones…man, I could go on! It’s nice to be able to take a virtual trip back down memory lane ever so often.
2) I’ve met some awesome people from it. I never would have imagined that I’d actually meet people through blogging, let alone start friendships. I’ve connected with some amazing women over the last couple of years that I’m so honored and proud to know! And the fact that this blog has been seen in countries like the UK, Canada, Jamaica, and Germany simply boggles my mind! Like, wow! I have no other way to describe it. Just, wow!
3) It has helped me become a better writer. Scratch that. It has MADE me a writer. I never really thought of myself as a writer before I started blogging. I knew I had solid writing skills (I’ve always loved English); but I didn’t think I had the chops to move people with my words. Some have been moved to tears and others to laugh while reading my blog, and that’s kinda cool if you ask me. We all have the power to affect one another in positive ways and blogging affirms that sentiment for me.
3) It creates opportunities. Who’da thunk that I would be able to work with major brands like Walmart, be featured on sites like Pampers.com and BlackandMarriedwithKids.com…all from running this little blog of mine. Blogging has brought out the inner-entrepreneur in me! I see so many great things to come for me and my family, all from me taking a chance to see where this blogging thing can go.
On the flip side, running a blog can feel like a part time job sometimes! It can be a lot of work and very time consuming, if you let it. I want this space to grow, but the moment I don’t enjoy it anymore – it’s a wrap!
I’m sure I could list a few more reasons, but this is the long and short of it.
For all of my blogger-cyber-sisters out there: why do you blog?
And for any readers or lurkers: why do you read blogs?
