I Dropped My Baby Weight, but My Husband Still Has His

My husband has always been rail thin. For the eight years I’ve known him, he’s had a lean build with a metabolism that moves faster than the speed of light! He’s the kind of person that can eat whatever he wants, when we wants and not ever gain a pound.

Annoying, right?

That was the case…until I got pregnant. To my surprise he put on sympathy weight during my pregnancy and grew his own little “pooch.” Over the last year and a half that he’s been a stay-at-home dad, that pooch is slowly turning into a gut! He still has a slender frame (I doubt that will ever change), but this extra “baby” weight he’s carrying has definitely become noticeable.

I’ve been working this year at maintaining my weight loss from last year. I actually weigh less now than I did before I had my daughter and that’s pretty cool. I still have some progress to make in terms of firming and toning, but for the most part, I’m sticking with the idea of staying active to stay healthy – not just to be skinny.

And that’s the part that escapes my husband. He eats like he’s still in his twenties instead of his late thirties!

So I’m pulling the mom card and mandating some changes to the way we eat! I’m about to be on my Michelle Obama up in this piece!

There won’t be anything too drastic (like going vegan or something like that) because I loves me some ice cream! But we will be cutting back on the amount of sweets we eat and junk food that we buy from the store (like greasy, Lay’s potato chips).

There shall be more fruits and veggies had by all!

With the help of my MIL to prepare her meals, my little one gets the nutrition she needs and we give her very little processed foods. I want to model those same habits for me and the hubster, because as she gets older her attitudes and behaviors toward food will come directly from us.

Here’s to a happier, healthier, Wright household!

How’s your family’s diet and/or physical activity level?

Girl! I know EXACTLY what you talking about. I’ve been working out routinely for the last few years…but hubs not so much.
It is weird because we used to be the opposite. We, as a family, have some work to do as far as diet. I do okay but I need to get us all on the same page. Guess I better get on it!

  • I’m still stuck in my 20′s right along with your husband! I’m still 8lbs shy of my pre-pregnancy weight. Which isn’t that bad, except I’m carrying it in my mid-section:( I love to eat…not junk food or sweets, but lots of carbs and butter! I need to take a cue from you and get moving. I think my lack of exercise is my biggest problem. Hubby’s gain a little weight but nothing major. We both need exercise in our lives.

  • Roses Daughter

I actually weigh less now than I did when I got pregnant. But the weight has redistributed itself! But the hubby..SMH. He still loves those Oreos like he did when I was pregnant. I’m gonna have to put him on a diet too!

  • i like that pic!
we’re all eating healthy and now my hubby looks pregnant while i’m nowhere near being or looking pregnant. We’re all healthier now – but everyone is at different stages of life. My husband is in a stressful job – he wants to lose the weight but there’s only so much he can do in a day. I try to be supportive but sometimes i fail – but on a practical note, all we drink is water now – no sugary juices and i make a green smoothie every morning which is really helping. my oldest is 22 and my youngest is 9 so i really dont remember if he gained sympathy weight.

  • let the church say – Amen. The hubs put on weight with me the first time around. He might still have a little of it hanging around. I’ll let him slide. Maybe he’s keeping those last few pounds as sympathy weight since I’m carrying baby number two. :)

  • Girl, my husband and I should both be ashamed of ourselves for our habits. My husband is probably 20 pounds more than when I met him, and I’m up 15. I weighed earlier this week and I weigh more than I ever have.

I have the same attitude as you — make better choices to be healthy, not necessarily to lose weight. Which is why the husband and I are currently training to run a 5K.

But child, we’re getting fatter by the minute because we eat like it’s nobody’s business. Changes coming for us very soon.

Good for you to weigh less than you did pre-baby. You should be super proud of yourself! :-)
